Posted in

Following 47 years of practice and community service in Asheville, David Hillier has announced his retirement on April 1, 2021. Please join us in celebrating Dave’s career and congratulating him on the advent of his retirement.

“Dave always has a positive outlook. He is never negative in his approach to the profession or his personal life. His optimism and good humor got me through some tough times in my own life. I could not have asked for a finer law partner or a better friend,” says career-long partner, Howard Gum. “As Dave often reminds me, there are two rules to live by: First, don’t sweat the small stuff and second, it’s all small stuff. I am extremely proud to have been his law partner and to remain his friend. I am proud of the legacy that we left that I know will be carried on by Patrick and Janet.”

Dave is a North Carolina Board Certified Legal Specialist in Consumer Bankruptcy Law. He has been consistently recognized through peer review in the Legal Elite, at Best Lawyers in America, and Super Lawyers North Carolina in their Consumer Bankruptcy sections, and has held an AV Preeminent Rating from Martindale-Hubbell for decades. His service to people in financial distress throughout our western mountains has had lasting impact on their families and has advanced the economies of the communities in which they live. Over the years, Dave has mentored numerous young lawyers promoting professional service, camaraderie, and ethics in the practice of law.

“Dave is a lawyer’s lawyer, a mentor, and a longtime personal friend”, says Rod Kight, another Asheville based bankruptcy lawyer. “His pragmatic approach, personable style, and genuine desire to help people continue to inspire me. The 28th Judicial Bar is a better place because of his service.”

And though his work in the law has impacted lawyers and individuals alike in positive and lasting ways, his participation in the civic affairs of his community and church has reached a much broader audience of recipients. Over the decades, Dave has served as President of the 28th Judicial District Bar, as a member and Chair of the Asheville City School Board, on numerous United Way Committees, at the Asheville Boys Club, at Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Buncombe County, ath the Asheville Civil Service Board, the Consumer Credit Counseling Service Board, and the Asheville Regional Airport Authority. He was instrumental in forming Mountain House, a day training center for mentally ill individuals following years of service to the Beverly Farm Foundation, where his brother was a resident. Every week for more than 20 years, Dave served as a tutor at Jones Elementary School, and as a cross country and youth sports coach for season after season.
